The Synagogue of Satan is the founding work in which Przybyszewski develops the heart of his Satanic system of thought. His prose became a classic of decadent and symbolist literature and a reference for many occult circles of the early 20th century.
His ideas have notably influenced writers and artists such as Edward Munch, Hanns Heinz Ewers who drew inspiration from them for his lectures 'The Religion of Satan' which he gave for more than 15 years in Europe, and the esoteric order of the Fraternitas Saturni who contributed to propagate his visions by integrating them into his own spiritual and magical representation of the world.
The book is presented in 3 essays: The first deals with the historical development of Satanism.
The second essay introduces the priests of the Church of Satan: the Witch, the Wizard, the Sorcerer, and their cult: the Sabbath and the Black Mass.
The third essay presents a scholarly critical assessment of Satanism, tracing its manifestations in modern art and in later religious sects.
The Synagogue of Satan remains to this day the most comprehensive study of the origin and development of modern Satanism.
